Dancing with Daddy

We are now officially into Autumn here in our corner of the world. This summer brought cold and rainy weather, however, September was hot and sunny; definitely not normal. Now that we are heading into October, the weather seemingly has changed overnight. It is cooler and the leaves are beginning to change colour and fall.

A few days ago, we were enjoying the last hot days of the season while out on the deck BBQing. Amy decided that she and Daddy should practice their dance moves and I couldn't help but snap a few pictures. Amy had to demonstrate some of the finer points of the routine.
Daddy tried his best, but ballet just isn't his thing. Good effort though!

The Backyardigans

Last year, we took Amy to see The Wiggles, and on Sunday, we went to The Backyardigans, making this her second concert. Amy was very excited sitting in her seat with her little flashy fiber optic thingy, but Robin and I were less enthusiastic. Let's just say that was one long hour.
The best part of the concert was playing with her good friend Izzy. As you can see, we've been watching too much of The Three Musketeers.
At least the girls had fun.

Corn Maze

On Saturday, last weekend, we joined our FCC (Families with Children from China) Group at the local Corn Maze. As I was busy packing the car, Amy made a sign so that all of our friends would know where to meet. The first thing Amy did once we arrived was to go on a horse ride.
Then, she spent a large amount of time in the petting zoo.
And finally, she and Daddy climbed up and down and up and down and up and down the hay bale pyramid.

Needless to say, someone slept very well that night (Amy slept well too!).

Bento

Amy's lunches take a long time for me to make at night and here's the reason why. We got a special delivery from Japan the other day - accoutrements for Bento Boxes. There are all sorts of do-dads that transform food into art.
All that and a great book full of ideas. . .
. . . completely written in Japanese. Hmm. This might take me awhile to decipher!

Cinderella

Last week, Robin was in Chicago for a conference and brought Amy home a wonderful gift - a Cinderella costume. She was so excited she had to put it on right away. There was not only a dress and a tiara, but wonderful glass slippers that flashed when she walked. Amy looked so comical trying to walk and watch her shoes at the same time. It's a wonder she didn't bash into something!
Thank you Daddy.
You really are my handsome prince.

Home Study

Yeah! Our Social Worker came today to interview us for an update to our home study for our second adoption. The paper chase for this adoption seems to be going much slower, partly because it is. Last time, I was so excited and focused. This time, however, life has interfered and thrown us a few wrenches: the trip to China, selling the old house, moving into the new one, renovations, and now work!

Well, the home study is done now. The Social Worker thinks it will be finished in a few weeks and then our dossier is done - except for pictures of our house and yard. It's a beautiful day today and the house is clean, so there's no time like the present!

The Red Sox

One of the cute details from the wedding last weekend that made it so personal was the Red Sox. Dave is a huge sports fan, baseball in particular, and he loves the Red Sox. The first 'Dave touch' was the team emblem that decorated Amy's flower basket.
I saw the second 'Dave touch' later during the reception when Dave asked me if I'd seen his cake. I don't think I've ever heard of a groom referring to the wedding cake as his cake before until then. When I saw the cake, I totally got it. It really was his.

Dance Class

This week was the beginning of dance classes. On Sunday afternoon, Amy has Traditional Chinese Dancing and on Tuesday after school, she has ballet. Amy loves to dance and seems to be really enjoying her classes.
She asked tonight where we were going after school and was disappointed when I told her Costco, her favourite place to go to dinner. She wanted to go to another dance class instead!

The Wedding

The first order of the day was a quick trip to the nearest town (a 45 minute drive - perfect for a nap) for a hair-do. Amy sat so well and looked absolutely adorable while her head was covered in curls.
Then it was off for a quick game of mini-golf and an ice cream at a place we passed on the way.
Back at the hotel, Amy and I explored the grounds. There are horses and a stable here, but unfortunately, the pony that children ride on was lame (literally, not figuratively!), and Amy was not able to go for a ride. She was, however, a great sport about it and just wanted her picture taken with the other horses that were saddled up and ready to go out on a trail ride.
After some time on the play structure and swings, it was time to get ready for the wedding. With all the time outside and the unseasonably warm weather, Amy's hair-do was almost nonexistent. Due to Arlene's foresight, however, we had bought a curling iron and super duper hairspray in town. So after a recreation of the hair-do, Amy was ready to party!

The wedding was on a boat and the weather was perfect - twenty one, not a cloud in the sky and the lake was a clear as glass.
The little girls were so cute as flower girls. They each had a basket of rose petals and they would toss them on the ground, collect them back into their baskets and toss them again. This went on throughout the entire ceremony. Poor Shannon had her dress picked up a number of times so that hidden petals could be discovered. Thankfully, both Shannon and Dave have such relaxed and fun personalities, that it didn't matter at all. Dave told me after that he was actually quite happy for the distraction.

I was so proud of Amy as she stood in every picture with the rest of the wedding party, usually holding either Dave or Shannon's hand.
Once at the ceremony, there were disposable cameras on the tables. Amy picked up ours and began taking our picture. She then ventured out into the crowd and began taking their pictures as well.
Once the band began to play, Amy was up on the dance floor! At first she wanted me to dance with her . . .
. . . but she eventually ventured off on her own.
This lasted for an hour and a half. She would dance like crazy, come back to the table for a drink, and then head off dancing again. Finally, she came crying to the table, reporting that someone was in her "spot" on the dancefloor. At the point, I knew her party was over and it was time to go.

The Wedding - The Short Version

We are home once again and gearing up for another week of work and school.
The wedding was wonderful and Amy was fantastic . . . and so adorable, not that I'm biased. Given the hour, I will do a long post tomorrow. Here's one of my favourite pictures for now.

Rehearsal

When I began my career in education, I taught in an isolated community in the North. I quickly formed many wonderful friendships that have stood the test of time. These former teaching colleagues are now spread across the country (and world), but I still speak to them on a regular basis. There is Teresa in Brandon, Jennifer in Calgary, Karen in St. John's, Merv in Hong Kong and, of course, the ever present Arlene.

One wonderful friend is Dave. Dave is an RCMP, and most importantly, was the only one of us up north that had access to a vehicle! A mutual relationship was formed as we would regularly phone to ask Dave for dinner, but only if he would pick up some milk on his way over.

This weekend, Dave and his beautiful fiance Shannon, are getting married. Arlene, Amy and I are in a National Park this weekend where the wedding is taking place. Robin isn't with us as he is in Chicago at a conference that he is chairing and has been planning for the past two years. He tried to get Dave and Shannon to change their wedding date, but they didn't seem to keen to accommodate him. Sheesh!
Last night was the rehearsal. They are getting married on a boat, so we went out to the marina last night after a wonderful BBQ.
I didn't get any pictures of the actual rehearsal as I was too busy wrangling children. Airlyn is the other flower girl and her mother is one of the bridesmaids, so the task of trying to keep the girls on track fell to me.
I wasn't successful.
The captain came to my rescue and suggested the girls might want to watch a movie - Finding Nemo, of course! And the best part, he gave them a bag of chips. That makes for two happy campers. Three, if you count me!

Again??

As I was walking out the door yesterday morning, heading off for my second day of work, I overheard this conversation.

Amy: "Where shes going?"
Daddy: "To work."
Amy: "Again??!?"
Yes Muffin, I'm off to work again. Two down, one hundred and ninety-eight to go.

First Day of School (and work!)

Before I start whining, let me just say I will be forever grateful for the two years that I spent at home with my girl. I did not have to go back to work, it was my choice, but I felt that if I didn't go back now, my brain would permanently turn to mush and I would lose all that I have worked so hard for. I'm still, however, sad to be going back. Amy, on the other hand, was excited to be going to school (after I wiped the toothpaste off her mouth), although I know she hasn't figured out what "full time" means. She was up just after seven this morning so that I was still able to get her ready for the day, part of my day that I love, and take pictures of her first day.
After me getting her ready, she then got Daddy ready by taking out one of his briefcases to the car.
The entire time I was at work, I thought of her. Did she cry? Was she comfortable with her teachers? Did she have any of her friends in her class?
Thankfully, Robin took my camera and snapped a picture as she was heading in.
She looks happy enough!
According to her story tonight, she did not cry and "was nice to the other childrens that were screaming all day long!", she loved her cucumber flowers for lunch (I still have to make lunches tonight. I'm afraid I set the bar a little high for the first day back!), and has one of her old friends in class with her. I think she'll do just fine.
Now I just hope I can survive!

Last Day of Vacation

Okay, I guess technically it's not vacation if you're on leave, but it sure feels that way.

Tomorrow I go back to work full time. My intention was to not work full time, but here I am. I have actually been off for about four years; two while I went back to school to finish a Masters and two when Amy came home. I did work part time for a year while I was at University, full time for the month of September two years ago before we left to travel to China and get Amy and I also taught part time at the University for a semester, but it feels as though that, somehow, doesn't count.

So today, we celebrated the last day of vacation. Amy and Robin came bounding into my room this morning just after 8am. I eat my words!! She made it and had a great sleep! Robin did not fare so well. He noticed, as they were reading books last night, that Amy's air mattress was losing air, so he switched with her. Thirty minutes later, it was flat. He also had rotated the carefully placed tent just before they crawled in last night and unfortunately, did not think of the slight slope down to the river. And finally, the fact that the tent appears to have been constructed for people only slightly taller than Amy, led to significant leg cramps. Notwithstanding the whining about lack of sleep and sore muscles, Robin was extremely proud of his little camping buddy.

For the remainder of the day, we just relaxed. Well, Robin worked up on the third floor, but came down occasionally to partake in gymnastics. Amy was trying to get him to do a back flip, but it seems he's not as flexible as he used to be. She pushed . . . . . . and pulled.
He still, however, could not quite manage it.
I have been reading a fluffy, summer novel (a Patricia Cornwell) and was hoping to finish it. I didn't.
I've been reading about Bentos lately (some might think a Cornwell novel is more riveting, but I disagree) and thought I would try the Japanese art of presenting lunch myself. I made Amy some cucumber and carrot flowers with cheese leaves along with corn, cheerios and a cookie (she has fruit for her snack) and it really was enjoyable. Yes, I do know my idea of fun is different than most.
It did, however, take a long time. I finished cleaning up dinner and making lunches at 10 tonight. Okay. I did read my book for awhile on the veranda with a beverage before starting on the Bento, but like I said, it's the last day of summer vacation!
