Company

After work yesterday, Robin (and Amy) had a play date with some friends. Ben, Julianne and their dad Peter came over, as did Jenna and her mom Maureen (we hope you feel better Julia).
There was a rousing game of girls against the boys, but poor Ben was feeling a little outnumbered being in "jail" all the time with no way to escape.
Eventually, Maureen, Julianne and Amy all got put in jail too.
To end a fun evening, Jenna spent some time teaching Amy the finer points of hula hooping.
Thanks for coming over everyone!

Sunday Afternoon

The weather here has been fabulous for March. We hardly have any snow left and Sunday afternoon was so beautiful that Amy and Robin were running around without any jackets on. Definitely uncommon for our corner of the world. I was at the symphony in the afternoon, but came home to find these two out practicing soccer. Amy is really getting into the game and loves to kick the ball around. She also loves to be in the goal.
Daddy loves it when she's in the net too so he can score.
He then began explaining to Amy how goal scorers often take off their shirts.
Well, you can tell Amy something and not expect her to take a crack at it.
Except, it took her a little longer.
She likes to take her shirts off top down . . . which makes it difficult . . . and time consuming
.
The game has a tendency to go on without you.

Hey, Daddy! You can't play without me! There. He can't play without me now!
After the halftime show, we decided to check out the river. People often ask if we are in danger of flooding. The river is currently high, but there is still a long way to go before we flood. The stick with the orange and purple ties on it denotes the 1 in 750 year flood mark. Historically (in the last 160 years) this property has never flooded, so I think we're safe, at least for the next 590 years.
The two soccer players took a much needed rest.
Amy and Daddy cuddling.
Amy and Mommy cuddling. Okay, maybe I was tickling her. Sometimes, I just can't help myself!
Our friend Lyla recently had a baby and Amy has become very preoccupied about how babies are made and being in my tummy. I try to take the opportunity to explain that she was not in my tummy, but in another woman's tummy in China. She still, however, insists that she needs to be in my tummy.
And then she tries to come out. Often, it's from the wrong end.
On our way back up to the house, we took a wander around to check out the river.
Back at the house, we BBQed salmon and enjoyed a nice dinner together, which doesn't seem to happen too much lately. What a fantastic Sunday afternoon.

Amy-isms

- Not really an Amy-ism, but . . . For Amy's birthday, she received lots of fabulous crafts, which she loves. I was working one night late last week, so she and Daddy decided to tackle the fairy princess wand. This always makes me cringe as Robin's perceptive reasoning is a little . . . umm . . . shall we say weak. Anything that needs to be constructed takes a lot of brain power on his part. I'm pleased to announce that the construction went fine, but the decorating went a little awry. More of it ended up on Amy than on the wand. Poor Daddy. I guess the instructions weren't that explicit!

- We feel that Amy has been watching too much T.V. lately. What's lead us to this conclusion? Well this morning, as we were discussing what kind of muffins Daddy might like us to make, she announced to him that "chocolate muffins are coming up . . . next on Playhouse Disney!". The other day, Robin and Amy were talking about who they would like to have a playdate with. Robin suggested that he could check to see if J and B were "available" to which Amy chimed in, "now on DVD". I think these are definite signs.

- Amy will often ask if she's "hwarious".

- I am, admittedly, very particular about a lot of things, but I didn't think it was that obvious until lately. When Amy gets annoyed with me she says, "Quit organizing me!!!" ????!!!???

- Yesterday Amy and I were food shopping. She was sitting in the child seat in the cart as she has recently decided she is too big for the little car shopping carts. Unprovoked, she looked up at me and said, "You are the best Mommy ever. I think I'll keep you for ever". Then she wrapped her arms around me and laid her head on my chest. I don't think I've ever cried in a grocery store before.

Amy's 4th Birthday

It was a weekend of celebration around here as Amy turned four.

On Saturday, her actual birthday, we had a family dinner - just to get warmed up.
Then today, we had the kids party with some of Amy's little friends and their parents. I must say, it was a little chaotic at times, but it was lots of fun.

The kids were great and although we had planned games, we never got around to playing them; they were having too much fun just running around. We did do a craft, and then sat down to lunch. Given it was a Mickey Mouse party, we had hot dogs. Tell me I'm not the only parent in the world who can't stand that song!
Then it was time to open the gifts. It was entertaining to see all the little girls trying to get Amy to open their present first. They were all very cute.
Some of the guests left, but a few stayed on to play. Thankfully, the Daddies took them out to play while the Mommies enjoyed a beverage!
They all crammed into the little house as well as played in the left-over-from-last-fall leaves.
Then it was off to the play structure to swing, climb and slide. When they came back into the house, they were covered in mud and leaves, but they had had fun in the process.
I'm sure it's not a surprise, but Amy actually went to bed quite early tonight, which is very unusual for her. After the weekend's excitement, she is one pooped little party girl.

Happy Birthday Krissy - March 12th

We made a quick jaunt to Toronto last weekend to celebrate Krissy's 25th birthday (it was actually on the 10th).

The weekend commenced with some obligatory Backyardigans watching. Exciting, I know. For dinner on Saturday, we went to a Medieval dinner and to say it made an impression on people would be an understatement. Once back at Sean's condo, we promptly began to reenact the evening's excitement.

John was the first brave Princess Knight to dare to challenge the fearless Princess Knight Amy. Of course John felt compelled to bring in a secret weapon - Ye Olde Hulk Fist! It didn't take Amy long to slay him and hop on her trusty steed . . .
. . . Daddy! Who, by the way, was the first to complain about Sean's new floors, claiming he much prefered the cushy carpet instead and mumbled something about his delicate knees.
Quick Princess Knight Amy! Here comes your nemesis Princess Knight Krissy atop her horse John to challenge you to a joust.
Missed!!! Oh, that was close!
Oh oh. She's back again.
That horse John has pulled out Ye Olde Hulk Fist again! Watch out Steed Daddy!
Okay. Steed Daddy's delicate knees have had enough of this new floor. Time to rear up on the hind legs to joust from a different , more comfortable position. Hmmm. I wonder if there is a United Jousting Steed's Union? Perhaps I should organize one. The benefits in this job stink.
Okay. That's enough. It's time for the management to get a taste of the grunt work. Yeehaw!
We hope you had a happy birthday and a fun weekend Krissy. We sure did.

FCC Chinese New Year Celebration - March 6th

We had our annual Chinese New Year Celebration with all of our Families with Children from China friends. We had family and friends attend with us and it was lots of fun.

Amy still was not keen on the Lion Dancers, but I think she was enjoying Jillian's reaction across the table. Jillian did not seem to enjoy it at all, although her Daddy, Greg, seemed to be taking great joy in her reaction too!
Ahhh!!!!!!!! There it is again!!!!
Some of the little girls got up and performed for the group. They were just as terrific as they were last week.
After dinner, it was time for the elders to hand out the lucky red envelopes. Aunty Marilyn didn't seem to mind in the least that I publicly labeled her as old and make her sit in the center of the room. I do think she butchered saying "Happy New Year" in Mandarin though.

Happy Birthday Aunt Arlene - February 28th

It was Arlene's 29th birthday and we had a dinner to celebrate. Robin was in charge of making the birthday cake, and once again, he out did himself. It must have taken him hours to make all those cakes! Amy, of course offered to help Arlene with the hard part. She's thoughtful that way.
Happy Birthday Arlene. We hope you had a great day.

Chinese New Year Celebration - February 27th

Amy has been taking Chinese dance lessons since September and this weekend was the HUGE celebration concert. The dancers from the dance school performed as well as professionals from China. The entire day was exciting and . . . well . . . long.

It began with a dress rehearsal at noon. Of course there were some parents, namely me, that didn't quite get the whole idea of a dress rehearsal and forgot the dress at home! Thankfully, it wasn't only Amy who showed up in her usual outfit, but a few other little girls, mostly from our FCC, which makes me think they announced it in Mandarin!

Waiting backstage in a line was by far the most difficult part of the night!"Yes, I'm having fun Mama!"
". . . but really, what's the hold up??"
Once on stage, the girls really cut loose.
Sometimes I think Amy must be sneaking downstairs at night to watch Monty Python. I'm not sure this is a sanctioned dance step.
And yes, I do realize she only has half of her hair done. I'm a slow hair wrapper. What can I say?
Listening intently.
Dancing Queen.
Then it was a circuitous car ride home to provide for a long nap. Once back on our own turf, we spent quite awhile doing her makeup. Yes, I said makeup . . . on a three year old.
Who is this young woman? Man, they grow up so fast!
That's a bit better. There's my girl.
It was back to the concert hall for pizza and more waiting. The kids were enthralled by the Leapsters brought by Hope and Frankie. It kept them all occupied for some time. Thank you for sharing.
Then it was the group picture. Honestly, Amy loves to dance. You'd just never know it from this picture (she's the unhappy one in the front row)!
Keep your friends close and your enemies closer! Amy has a love/hate relationship with the Lion Dancers. She loves to watch them, but hates the noise and gets frightened if they get too close. The head, clearly severed and smothered by plastic, was more to her liking.
After all that, I did not get a picture of the girls on the stage. Guaranteed, it was wonderful and the little ones got the longest and the loudest applause, and not just from the backstage Mommys.
